Out of Practice

Monday, October 3, 2005

In lieu of an overall summary of this show, I'd like to focus on one particular line from the pilot. Let me set this up. Sis is a lesbian, complaining about how hard it is to find a girlfriend. Bro says she should come out with him, since every girl he meets is a lesbian (How does he know? They all turn him down! Haw-Haw) In describing this situation, he uses the following phrase:

"I'm like a dyke-sniffing truffle hound."

First off, can you say "dyke" on network TV? Apparently. More importantly, should you? I'd been under the impression that that was one of those words that really should only be used by the group the phrase applies as a kind of reclamation and defiance. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but, pretending for the moment that I don't really care what sort of expletives are used to describe any racial, gendered, or sexually oriented group, wouldn't I have probably turned off this show as soon as they presented a major, recurring character as a lesbian?
